Campaigners have taken to bridges across the world on the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration to spread their message of ‘bridges not walls’.It’s a reference to one of Trump’s most famous and divisive policies – to build a wall between the US and Mexico. A ‘Unite against Islamophobia’ sign was hung from Southwark Bridge in London. People gathered on London’s iconic Tower Bridge to hold up signs reading “build bridges not walls”. Blackfriars bridge had a protest, with campaigners each holding one letter of the phrase. Other campaigners drew attention to specific issues. People gathered on Westminster bridge with signs welcoming migrants and refugees. UK Black Lives Matter convened on London Bridge. The Bridges Not Walls campaign’s Twitter account said there were over 1000 people protesting on London’s bridges. In fact, bridge protests were seen across the UK. The message spread to Paris where signs were seen near the Eiffel Tower. And smaller forms of protest were even seen as far afield as Nepal.
